Free Writing . Little Books

When you participate in free writing exercises the priority here is to eliminate our internal editor that is inside our heads. Don’t stop to re-read anything, don’t edit, don’t worry about spelling or grammar.

Free Writing Tips –Natalie Goldberg, Writing Down The Bones

Keep your hand moving. Don’t pause to reread the line you have just written. That’s stalling and trying to get control of what you are saying.

Don’t cross out. That is editing as you write. Even if you write something you didn’t mean to write, leave it. Don’t worry about spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Don’t even care about staying within the margins and lines within a page.

Lose control.

Don’t think. Don’t get logical.

Go for the jugular. If something comes up in your writing that is scary, dive right into it.

“Free Writing is not about ‘quality’ writing. It is about externalising internal thoughts and feelings, some of which may startle you. It allows you to discover what you are waiting to know about yourself and issues that are closest to you.” “read what you have written in the spirit of discovery, not self-criticism”
–Stephanie Dowrick
